The Wings Over Myrtle Beach Airshow is Ready for Takeoff
Chauncey Smith | 27 Mar 2018
With beautiful views all along the shore of Myrtle Beach, it's easy to find your gaze locked on the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean. But if you're taking a Myrtle Beach vacation during April 28th and 29th, be sure to keep your eyes on the skies as the Wings Over Myrtle Beach Airshow takes place. If you haven't already booked a weekend spring trip to Myrtle Beach, this is a great time to visit the coast!
The Grand Strand was home the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base from 1958 to 1993, so the ties to fighter jets and the area spans over four decades and remains a source of pride. For the majority of its commission, the base was home to the 354th Fighter Day Wing/Fighter Tactical Wing, composed largely of A-10 Warthog aircraft.
Within the past ten years the area has undergone a facelift and is now home to the Market Common shopping and dining district, but memorials to the former base are ever present, like the Warbird Park facility, a military museum at Crabtree Gym and Thunderbolt Park, currently under construction.
The Wings Over Myrtle Beach Airshow will be the first exhibition of fighter jets in several years to take place along the Grand Strand. A who's who of jet demonstration teams will exhibit tremendous nerve, skill and synchronization for showgoers to admire.
The headliner of the airshow will undoubtedly be the Blue Angels, proudly representing the US Navy and renowned as the premier military jet demonstration team. With a rich history dating back over 70 years, the Blue Angels have wowed airplane enthusiasts all over the world and will showcase breathtaking agility and teamwork in their F/A-18 Hornet jets in the skies over Myrtle Beach.
In addition to the Blue Angels, several other tremendous demonstration teams will exhibit nerves of steel and world-class flying skill. The US Air Force F-16 Viper Demo team will show off the extreme speed and incredible maneuvers the F-16 jet is capable of. They will team with the USAF Heritage Team, flying classic P-51 Mustangs that were the backbone of America's air superiority throughout the 1940s and 1950s and seeing action in World War II and the Korean War.
Showgoers will also witness pulse-pounding aerobatic displays performed by world-class pilots Rob Holland, Patty Wagstaff and Michael Wiskus, all among the most award-winning and renowned pilots working competitive and airshow circuits today. Guests will also be treated to a demonstration by the Para-Commandos, the US Special Operations Command's premier parachute team.
As you can see, the two-day Wings Over Myrtle Beach Airshow will be packed with thrills and exhilarating demonstrations of piloting skill. General admission tickets can be purchased for $25 in advance and $30 at the gate of the event, while kids, military and first responder tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the gate. A very limited number of elevated bleacher seats with prime location are left for the Sunday show and available for $35 in advance, but these are likely out very soon.
